Empire Magazine

Forms and Conventions
The cover of this magazine clearly shows the genre it is following, the fact it has a well known movie star on the front in large and the banner reading 'GREATEST MOVIE MOMENTS' shows that film/the film industry is what this magazine features. There is big ue of the colour red suggesting the charaxcter on front is voilent and bloody thursty. plus red is a stricking colour espically when the everything else on the page is in grey and white, therefore drawing the attention the most important parts being the red title and the red features. Also the fact this character has a big scare on his neck and a smug look on his face gives him a phsycotic look about him. the scare showing he has been involved in fights or violence and the fact that he is pulling his head upwards shows he is not ashamed of it. Other films have also been mentioned on the cover of the magazine, showing that they dont just feature this one main movie inside but their is information about other films aswell.

Audience
This magazine cover was made to grip the audience whilst giving them a clear indication of what the magazine is about. The fact the character on the cover is holding a knife and pointing it at the audience as if to suggest 'your next' making the audience feel threatened whilst he has eye contact with them enhancing this point. Also his thumb is resting on the knife gently with a tight grip on it showing that he knows exactly what he is doing but at the same time he is very careful and protective over his chosen weapon. Words like 'greatest' 'epic' and 'only' have been used to illustrate the importance and originality  of the magazine and buy highlighting them in bold or in a different colours shows there importance and creates a uniqueness to the magazine. The magazine cover also reaches out to a wide variety of audiences; 'Megan Fox dressed as a cheerleader' gives it a sexual appeal, 'Funny People - Ricky Gurvais//Will Farrell//Judd Apatow' gives it a comedy factor and the famous character who looks agressive and skemming on the front gives it an edge to the cover.

Insititutions
Empire magazine is one the top selling film magazines in Britain. It is a British film magazine which is published monthly by Bauer Consumer Media. The purpose of the magazine cover is to entise the audience to be intrested enough to want to purchase the magazine. The cover plays a big part in this. This issue cover uses; a famous icon, 'only' interviews with the icon (making the magazine seem unique and special compaired to other film magazines) and humourous by listing 'Funny People' at the bottom to show there is comedy inside.

Representations
This issue is representing a violent action film, you can tell this by the character on the front in large. The scar on his neck and the fact he is holding a knife that is pointing toward the audience enhance this point and whilst the concrete grey background complements this by not distracting the audience from the main focus. The use of dark colouring such as the blood red and grey background and the characters black clothing, give the sense of abstruse feeling. However, the light blue part in the top and bottom corners balence it out and show that there is some light informationa and easy reading parts inside.

The Uninvited Trailer

Forms and Conventions
'The Uninvited' is a psychological horror that contains many forms of its genre that are shown within the editing and dynamics of this trailer. The beginning is a sequence of flash backs of the main female character, this is significant because its trying to give the audience a taste of the girls past so they can relate to her current situations. Also a bird’s eye view is used to film the girl running out of a building as if she is trying escape. This could give us a clue to the up-coming events of the film and at the same time make the viewer feel superior to her making the us doubt her next moves.

Audience
The target audience would most likely be young adults and older teenagers; this is because the main characters are all that age, therefore attracting that audience by making them feel as if they can relate to the characters. Also the whole trailer is full of very fast moving clips forcing the audience to pay attention and once ended, it leaves them eager to know more and find out the actual ending, therefore filling its purpose as a trailer. Plus I would definatly say that this is a uni-sex film, even though it is featuring a young girl there is also two other male main characters and the horror & gore factor balance’s it all out.

Institution
The film was produced by ‘DreamWorks’ which is a hugely famous company, this makes the film more appealing and approachable because of the fact that it is well known and secure. Also the film has an all-star cast produced a gross revenue of over $40,000,000 showing this film is worth watching and has high ratings.

Representation
This trailer is representing the girl and the recent events that are happening, however she is not alone. She has an older sister that she is close with that agrees with all her plans which encourages the main characters behaviour. She is represented as very much the victim and the people around here are the evils ones, this is done by the audience having knowledge that she lost her mother and was forced to stay away from her sister and she is with her father who is questioning whether she should be in her family, making the viewer’s give her huge sympathy.

Grazia – Consider the representation of people and issues on this website (12 marks)

Grazia
As soon as you enter this website, it is very clear it is a fashion and celebrity focused magazine. The biggest image on the page Jake Gyllenhaal, a famous actor and by pressing on a link, it is made clear that Grazia is doing a feature on his new film. This shows that the audience reading this are clearly interested in the celebrity world and by doing a piece on him (including an interview) it is clear the things written are going to be praising his work making Jake Gyllenhaal come off in a very positive light.

There is also a piece on Natalia Vodianova (an A list model) under the subtitle of ‘Hot Trend!’ representing her as a ‘Hot Trend’ to the audience reading. This is obviously a compliment the way she dresses and styles herself, once again enhancing the fact that the magazine is putting celebrities in a positive and fashionable light.

Toward the bottom of the page there is a puff reading “Fashion as it happens”, dealing with all the latest fashion issues of the month. Each one has a sub heading such as The App Show, Grazia Daily Nail, Wardroom Whispers and The Gossip which give the audience a specific insight to what the article is  going to be about. All these issues are aimed at a certain audience, this audience being stereotyped as middle/upper class women, age ranging from late twenty’s to early thirty’s. You can also tell this from the advertisement around the boxed information, by advertising a up market brand called Burberrie, it reinforces the fact that this magazine is aimed at the particular audience of upper class people.

Coursework:

For my coursework i have chosen to do Breif One and within this brief i am doing tasks A; which is creating a independant British film trailer that will appeal to 16 - 25 year old students, and i am doing task B aswell which is making a magazine articile that will be featuring out trailer and include photoshoots, interviews, quotes and background information.
Myself, Phoebe and Tash will be creating these two pieces of coursework and will share roles equily between us meaning we shall all participate in being the director, organising locations, camera-man, scrip writing and editing.
We have got a few early ideas that we feel will gie us a clear direction to where our work will take us, such as:
- Genre being horror
- Having a phsychological horror trailer
- Base the trailer on teenagers to make it appeal more to our specfic catagory
- Use a photoshoot that will promote the trailer and add in the magazine articile
